On the day my 25 year-old sister Heather, learned that she had breast cancer, I made a promise to her that I would not stop fighting until there was a cure for breast cancer. Heather passed away 17 months later. That was almost 11 years ago. Since then, I have been passionately involved in the Komen Global Race for the Cure, as captain of a team named for my sister in order to give meaning to Heather's death.

Top Fundraising Tips & Tools for Teams

Top 5 Fundraising Tips for Teams

1. Know Your Team. Know your reason why your team is participating in and fundraising for the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure^®. To honor or support a friend or loved one. To make a difference in the movement to end breast cancer forever. To enjoy a run on the National Mall and support a good cause. Whatever the reason or reasons, you and your team will be more successful fundraisers when you are able to convey these reasons to your potential donors.

2. ASK! Your team should never miss an opportunity to ask for a donation, whether at work, school, a PTO meeting or any social gathering. Let everyone know about your team and your fundraising for the Komen Global Race for the Cure. Advertise your team and your fundraising goals.

3. Use Your Team Page in the Participant Center. You and your team have your very own Team Page with a specific URL (www address). People can donate to your team directly from this page. You can also send email from the email center using our sample messages. For many who rely on their computers and smart phones to stay connected, it's the best way to fundraise! (Keep in mind that donations made to a team cannot be divided among individual participants.)

4. Send fundraising and recruitment emails. By far this is the fastest way to gather donations from potential donors and recruit new team members. Use one of sample messages to send through your personal email account or through your Participant Center.

5. Facebook and Social Networking. Use Facebook and other social media like Twitter to stay connected to your team and to recruit new team members from among your network of friends and family. Use social media to organize and publicize a fundraising event for your team. In past years, teams have held movie parties, barbecues, bake sales, benefit nights at restaurants and bars, car washes, chore-a-thons. The sky's the limit. Publicize your event and put the "fun" back in Team fundraising!
