Local Need
Washington, D.C. has one of the highest incidence rates of invasive breast cancer in the United States: 128 per 100,000. While we have made significant progress thanks to the incredible fundraising participants of the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure™, the local need is still great. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recently released a wide-ranging analysis of the state of breast health in the National Capital Area, and found that women diagnosed with breast cancer in the National Capital Area are still more likely to die from the disease than the national average.
National Capital Area Grants Program
Funds raised from the Komen Global Race for the Cure are granted to local programs that support Komen’s promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever.
Up to 75 percent of the Komen Global Race for the Cure's net income stays in the Washington, D.C. area to fund breast cancer screening, treatment and education programs through the National Capital Area Grant Program. Through a competitive grant process, the Komen Global Race provides funding to not-for-profit organizations providing breast health services such as mobile mammography and other free or low-cost screening. In addition, the Komen Global Race provides grants to organizations offering treatment assistance and patient support services. All local grants are based on a community needs assessment that identifies and targets existing "gaps" in breast health and breast cancer services in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. We believe the key to eradicating this disease is through education, and we want to continuously spread our message of early detection.
Local Grantees for 2013
Susan G. Komen is pleased to announce the 2013 community grants to reach low-income, minority and uninsured women who fall through the healthcare gaps in the Washington, D.C. Metro area. The Komen-funded programs in the D.C. area strive to improve breast health access and services to women, representing a total in active grant funding of $8.5 million.
